New Years Knitting — Giveaway

If you had only one project to make for next year, which one would it be?  Every New Years, I try and start a new “big” project.  Of course, I haven’t completed the Wrap Me Up, which is taking me forever, but I am making progress so I find myself dreaming.  I have new lace weight yarn to try, new worsted weight yarn, several design ideas, help me make up my mind.  Link to pictures [preferably from Knittingtoday.com, but not necessary], projects, yarn, and tell me what you like most and why you would like to make it . . . . Overwhelm me!  Like I really need to be overwhelmed, but hey, maybe it’ll make me focus.  Lea-Ann

P.S.  I added the “giveaway” designation as I have an incredible Della Q goodie bag of “knitterly stuff” to give to some wonderful poster and we’ll choose January 2.

  1. I am hoping to get more use out of my USM in the new year. I’ve completed some smaller projects, including blankets for nephews, but I’m really hoping to see what this baby can do. I have a few hand knit projects that I’m looking to adapt to machine, first and foremost is the Ribby Cardi from ChicKnits. I’ve had the pattern and yarn FOREVER, so I’d really like to move forward with this.

Please drop my name into the hat for the giveaway. Good luck on your BIG project, whatever it becomes.

  2. Only one project! I think the top of my wish list would be to design my own sweater that really fits in a worsted weight like- Shepard’s Wool. I am dying(no pun intended ) to use this on a bigger project. I loved knitting it when I made the giant pumpkin. And so on I dream…….

  3. I think my next really big project might be a really nice aran sweater, for my husband. At least I’d like to think it will be. I’ve been wanting to make him one, but I still haven’t started the Andean hat yet, (the crochet threw me off,) still working on socks, and a cat bed, and I need to make my doggie a sweater. I think I’m much like you, Lea-ann, in the fact that we have too many ideas swimming around. I have had the idea for a while to make one of those really nice mohair lace shawls, for my hairdresser. She’s always going out of her way to do my hair. And I just got the patterns from ravelry for the postage stamps, from last year. I even have random thoughts for my own designs that never make it to paper. (Hope to change that.) Cat Bordhi has a nice pattern to hold Denise needle kit, it’s been in my head for a long time now. I have a free pattern for a small knit cable throw I want to make. Many things from the Holiday issue of “Vogue Knitting” magazine. I have many patterns from books, and free online that I would love to make. I’ll never be finished, but I’ll always have UFO’s.

  4. I started knitting in January and have not done a big project yet. This is the year though!

For me: a sweater for myself. As a new knitter and a size 18/20, that is going to be a project that will take a while for me. I’m taking a Sweater Workshop class to make sure I have the knitted skills needed. The fit I’d love to be perfect….and I haven’t even thought about yarn yet. Can’t be anything too hot. I’m in Florida!

I also want to knit a major lace project….like something from Victorian Lace Today or Knitted Lace of Estonia. I really want to try the Lacey Lamb yarn! To get prepared, I’ve *just* started my first lace weight yarn project….a scarf!

I’d love to be entered into your contest! Thank you!

  5. My dream project would be to make the Sylvi sweater coat from the Winter 2008 issue of Twist Collective.

More realistic is to make my first adult-sized sweater, which is going to be the House Sweater from Charmed Knits. I’m also going to make the Lady Eleanor stole and my first Clapotis.

  6. I have two projects in mind for the coming year. Number one will be to make socks, plenty of socks, so many socks they will fall out of the drawer that many socks. I have the yarn I just need to do the knitting. I even have several pairs started I just need to finish them, so socks is number one. Number two is the Top Down Swing Coat from Cabin Fever. I have the pattern just waiting on the yarn, Dream in Color “Fatty”. How is that coming along Lea-Ann? No rush because of number one.

  7. I’m getting VERY close to putting the Broncos afghan together for my husband. Now that was a BIG project that really had me feeling like it was never going to get finished! I’m kinda looking forward to tackling some new little projects, like mittens, fingerless gloves, and my son wants me to knit him a hat (the Thorpe) in his school colors: brown and orange, so I’ll probably try Shepherd’s Wool for that. If I were to commit to a big project it would probably be the Lady Eleanor Entrelac Stole (without the fringe) and I’d use Noro Silk Garden #203. I only have 4 skeins of this lovely yarn, so I’ll need to purchase a few more. I will probably make a somewhat smaller version since I’m so short and I plan to learn how to knit backwards, since I understand it makes knitting this pattern much easier!

Lea-Ann, I looked up the Wrap Me Up pattern and it’s awesome! I can’t wait to see yours when it’s finished! You didn’t say how much lace weight yarn you had reserved for a project, but how about knitting something from the book, Victorian Lace Today? Wow! There’s lots of fantastic patterns in this book!

Thanks for offering another contest! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  8. I want to make my son an intarsia digger sweater. The only problem is, I have to learn how to do intarsia….I’m horrible when it comes to learning new techniques. I just don’t have the patience for it.

  9. One of my biggest someday projects is the great american afghan — I think that would be so much fun to do.

Once my Christmas knitting is done, I want to learn Cat Bordhi’s moebius cast-on because it looks like a mindbender. I also want to do the Hanami stole this year, and design an entrelac stole with different lace patterns in each square. (Ambitous enough for you?)

On a separate note, since you’re interested in mitered projects, I’ve got a free mitered sock pattern on my blog. (Rav link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mitered-windowpane-socks) I designed it to take advantage of handpainted yarns.

  10. I think my big project for 2009 will be the Mitered Square sock yarn blanket. I’ve started it and fully expect it to take the full year and probably beyond. Several people have commented on it when they see it in person.
What I really want to do is a thigh length sweater coat for myself with cables, pockets, button front, self tie that has a cable in it. I’m leaning to a shawl collar. I haven’t decided on the fiber yet, but I’m leaning toward the Shepherd’s Wool.
However, this year I’m trying to use up some of the donated stash that is mostly acrylic that might qualify as antique. I’ve started hats for Caps for Kids and I’m aiming for 52. One for each week of the year.
I’d love to be entered for “knitterly goodies”
    Happy New Year,

    Theresa

  11. I am determined to knit Amused, from the new Knitty. I’ve been knitting for 14 years and I’ve never made an adult sized anything! I’m thinking I’m going to buy some cascade 220 for the task. If I can master that, then I’m going to make a sweater for my husband. He’s not too thrilled (because he’ll be forced to pretend he loves it even if he hates it) but I’m not giving him much of a choice. Here’s to a new knitting year!

  12. Me? One project? Big? Able to wow? Well anything I answer to that will be laughable.

I’d have to say an afghan for Jacki’s sorority auction. But then that is in the spring so I’d better get hopping. Maybe if I crochet it. 😉

  13. I have made several large projects in the last few months (adult sized sweaters) and I’m still working on a Christmas sweater for my son that I should be able to get to him by the end of January. As for a new undertaking for the new year, I would love to make a long sweater coat for myself, and like several of the others, I would want to make it out of Shepherd’s Wool. That stuff is so gorgeous. Before I get to that however, I usually do charity knitting in the first few months of the year, so I will try to decrease some of my stash by doing that before I make any big yarn purchases. (Since sock yarn doesn’t count as adding to my stash, I might spend a little of my Christmas money on some of that I’ve had my eye on.)

I would be very happy to win any knitterly goodies. I need to get started on my Christmas knitting a little sooner this year, so anything I would win could get me started on that project.

  14. My son will be getting his first “real” apartment sometime this year. The one he had at college doesn’t count. My big project for this year will be an afghan when he moves in.

  15. I have started the lizard ridge blanket and worked out where the wraps are on both sides here is a link to the square http://darcyknottyknitter.blogspot.com/2008/10/lizard-ridge-square-made-easy.html and here is a link to the Lizard ridge in strips http://darcyknottyknitter.blogspot.com/2008/11/doing-lizard-ridge-in-strips.html Iam going to do mine in strips then join them with crochet.Iam going to knit up one skein a month till I have a blanket.I have knit up 2 skeins so far.Iam finishing some hats for a warm hat charity drive for homeless shelters sending them off January 1st then can get started on the next skein.Iam apart of a group on ravelry called a year in a blanket here is the link to the group http://www.ravelry.com/groups/a-year-in-a-blanket I love the lizard ridge blanket and hope by next winter I will have one for my king size bed:) please check out my links and let me know what you think and please enter me in the giveaway:)Hugs Darcy knottyknitter40 on ravelry

  16. My “must make” project for 2009 is the Spiral Sweater form Elanns. I have the yarn, and now my Christmans knitting is done, I can’t wait to start it!
Please add me to the drawing and much thanks for doing this for us!
    Sincerely, justine 2811 on Ravelry

  17. I am interested in knitting the beautiful green wrap (?) I am not sure what you call it that has the cable pattern in it that is in your store. I just love it. I would use the Shephards wool and that will probably be my next big project and it will be for myself…

  18. I’m hoping that this year will be the year for a sweater for ME! Looking to do a jacket type (think Jean Frost) sweater appropriate for work, probably in a DK weight to make it a three-season wearable.

  19. I’ve had my eye on a Vogue Knitting (hand knit) sweater jacket with hood since Fall 2000. I finally started it this past fall. It will be for me, finally. I’ve been too busy knitting for everyone else. This is my “big” project for last year and this and I’m determined to have it done for early spring this year 2009. I’ve wanted this for a long time. I’m up to the armhole decreasing at this writing. I will post pictures when it’s done. Come on Lea Ann, match my determination!

  20. My goal is to use stash and make a hole in the bins of yarn in my studio. And take as many classes as I can afford.

  21. I want to make my daughter who collects giraffes, a full size afghan with giraffes knitted into it.
I had planned on doing it in 2008, but between health problems and too much other to do, it didn’t happen, so that is my big goal for 2009.
Outside of that, get a head start on making hats and scarves for charity for this coming CHRISTmas.

  22. I want do knit & crochet some hats for the hospital. I haven’t done much charity knitting but reading difference post has really got me to thinking alot about it. What a great contribution. I did some hats for camp last year and felt really good about it.

    Happy New Year Everyone!

  23. My big project is going to actually be several smaller projects. My goal is to finish 3 sweaters for each kiddo, for a total of 6 sweaters. One cabled, one intarsia, and one simple pullover for each. I can never find sweaters for them that fit, so we just layer our clothing like crazy. (23 degrees outside in TEXAS today. Yuk!) This way, I can make exactly what I want and not have to just settle on what the store has to offer me.
